OHW Diagnostics Cable

Product Overview

This OHW diagnostics cable is a custom cable assembly that connects a service tool to the diagnostic port of off-highway machines - excavators, loaders, tractors and trucks from Bobcat, Caterpillar, Hitachi, Komatsu, Volvo, Scania, Massey Ferguson and Carraro.

Existing builds include machine-specific cables for Bobcat (OHW-BOBC-C), Hitachi (OHW-HITA-C), Massey Ferguson (OHW-MASS-C1, OHW-MASS-C2), Scania CAN engine 4-pin (OHW-SCAN-C), Carraro (OHW-CARR-C), Caterpillar (OHW-CATE-C), Komatsu (OHW-KOMA-C), J1939 backbone (OHW-BACK-C) and Volvo Penta diesel 6-pin and 8-pin (OHW-VOLV-C2, OHW-VOLV-C6, OHW-VOLV-C8).

Each cable is built to the machine-side connector and the tool-side interface on the drawing. Cactus Electronics has produced diagnostic cables since 2009, to IPC/WHMA-A-620, with 100 % electrical testing before shipment.

Material & Rating

  • Connector — machine-side diagnostic plugs per brand (Deutsch, AMP, Sumitomo, J1939 9-pin), tool-side DB9, USB, RJ45 or open leads
  • Contacts — brass, gold-plated or tin-plated, selected by mating-cycle requirement
  • Conductor — stranded copper 24–20 AWG, PVC or PUR insulation
  • Jacket and overmold — PUR or PVC, black, with moulded strain relief for workshop use
  • Shielding — optional overall shield with drain wire for CAN lines
  • Temperature — 80 °C with PVC insulation, 105 °C with XLPE or TPE; PUR jacket for cold and oil exposure
  • Ingress protection — sealed overmolded connectors specified per drawing; workshop cables rated for outdoor use

Certification

Cactus Electronics is certified to ISO 9001, IATF 16949 and UL and manufactures to the IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship standard. Raw materials comply with RoHS. Every assembly passes 100 % electrical testing - continuity, insulation resistance and withstand voltage - before packing, and the QC-to-production personnel ratio is 1:3.

Application

Off-highway diagnostic cables are used by service technicians to read fault codes and flash controllers on machines in the field.

  • Excavator and loader service diagnostics
  • Agricultural tractor and combine fault code reading
  • Volvo Penta and Scania engine diagnostics
  • J1939 backbone access on mixed fleets
  • Dealer service tool kits and field laptops
  • Machine rental fleet maintenance

Custom Options

  • Machine-side connector: per brand, or built from your sample plug
  • Tool-side termination: DB9, USB, RJ45, OBD2 16-pin or bare leads
  • Cable length, coil or straight, jacket type (PVC or PUR)
  • CAN pair twisted and shielded, with or without terminating resistor
  • Samples in 3–7 working days; MOQ confirmed per project
  • Customer carton marking and DDP delivery on request

FAQ

What is the operating temperature rating of this harness?

Standard PVC-insulated assemblies are rated to 80 °C; XLPE or TPE insulation raises the rating to 105 °C. Workshop cables are normally PVC; cables for machines working outdoors year-round are quoted with a PUR jacket that stays flexible in the cold. The exact operating range for a part number is stated on its drawing and confirmed in the sample test report.

Is this overmolded harness waterproof?

The connector is overmolded over the cable, so the plug withstands rain, mud and wash-down in the field, and sealed machine-side connectors are used where the drawing specifies them. The ingress protection level (typically IP67 for a mated pair) is specified on the drawing and verified during sample validation. Non-overmolded assemblies can be supplied with heat-shrink or grommet sealing instead.

Can I customize the pinout and connector type?

Yes. Pinout, connector series and gender, cable length, wire gauge, jacket colour and overmold shape are all customer-defined. Each cable is mapped to one machine brand and one service tool, so pinout and termination are defined by the pair you use. Send a drawing, a sample, or a pinout table and we return a 2D/3D drawing prepared to IPC/WHMA-A-620 for approval before tooling.

What is your MOQ for custom cable?

MOQ is confirmed per project and depends on harness complexity, connector cost and tooling. Prototype and pilot batches are accepted before mass production, so a new programme can start with sample quantities. Samples are produced in 3–7 working days and mass production runs 20–30 days after approval.

What testing standards do you apply for harness?

Production follows IPC/WHMA-A-620. Every assembly is 100 % electrically tested for continuity, insulation resistance and withstand voltage; the in-house lab adds temperature and humidity cycling, salt spray, connector insertion and withdrawal force, and cable bending tests. Inspection records are kept in the ERP system.
