J1939, J1708 and RP1226 Connectors

Product Overview

This range covers the sealed circular connectors used on heavy-duty truck diagnostic and telematics harnesses: J1939 9-pin Type I and Type II, J1708 6-pin, RP1226 14-pin and the Cat 14-pin variant. Plugs and receptacles are supplied as loose parts or assembled into a complete overmolded harness.

Pinouts and footprints follow the industry-standard HD10 / HD16 series, so the parts mate with existing Deutsch-compatible harnesses and are interchangeable with the connector numbers listed below. SAE J1939 itself is the open standard for networking and communication in the commercial vehicle sector; it uses CAN technology on the physical layer according to ISO 11898, with 250 kbit/s for Type I and 500 kbit/s for Type II.

  • Contacts — brass, gold-plated or tin-plated; crimp termination
  • Seals — silicone interfacial seal and wire seal, fitted to the cable outside diameter
  • Pin counts — 6 (J1708), 9 (J1939 Type I/II), 14 (RP1226 and Cat)
  • Temperature — rated range stated per part number; 105 °C for the standard PA66-GF shells
  • Voltage — 12 V and 24 V vehicle systems
  • Ingress protection — sealed when mated with the matching plug or receptacle and fitted with the correct wire seals

Certification

Cactus Electronics is certified to ISO 9001, IATF 16949 and UL and manufactures to the IPC/WHMA-A-620 workmanship standard. Raw materials comply with RoHS. Every assembly passes 100 % electrical testing - continuity, insulation resistance and withstand voltage - before packing, and the QC-to-production personnel ratio is 1:3.

Application

These connectors are the interface between a vehicle diagnostic port and the harness that carries data to a tool or telematics unit.

  • Heavy-duty truck diagnostic ports - 9-pin J1939 Type I and Type II, 6-pin J1708
  • RP1226 telematics ports - 14-pin connector on newer truck models
  • Cat and off-highway engines - 14-pin diagnostic connector
  • Harness repair and re-termination - replacement plugs and receptacles matching the original part
  • Custom overmolded assemblies - the same shells built into a complete harness

Custom Options

  • Plug or receptacle, straight or with a backshell and strain relief
  • Pin count and keying: 6-pin, 9-pin Type I, 9-pin Type II, 14-pin
  • Contact plating: gold or tin, matched to mating cycles
  • Wire seals sized to your cable outside diameter, plus cavity plugs for unused ways
  • Supplied loose or assembled with cable, overmolded and 100 % electrically tested
  • Samples in 3–7 working days; MOQ confirmed per project

FAQ

What is the operating temperature rating of this harness?

Standard PVC-insulated assemblies are rated to 80 °C; XLPE or TPE insulation raises the rating to 105 °C. For engine-bay or near-exhaust routing we quote higher-temperature insulation and sleeving. The exact operating range for a part number is stated on its drawing and confirmed in the sample test report.

Is this overmolded harness waterproof?

Overmolded versions seal the connector-to-cable junction with a molded body, so a mated pair is protected against water and dust; the ingress protection level (typically IP67 for a mated pair) is specified on the drawing and verified during sample validation. Non-overmolded assemblies can be supplied with heat-shrink or grommet sealing instead.

Can I customize the pinout and connector type?

Yes. Pinout, connector series and gender, cable length, wire gauge, jacket colour and overmold shape are all customer-defined. Send a drawing, a sample, or a pinout table and we return a 2D/3D drawing prepared to IPC/WHMA-A-620 for approval before tooling.

What is your MOQ for custom ELD telematics cable?

MOQ is confirmed per project and depends on harness complexity, connector cost and tooling. Prototype and pilot batches are accepted before mass production, so a new ELD programme can start with sample quantities.

What testing standards do you apply for truck harness?

Production follows IPC/WHMA-A-620. Every assembly is 100 % electrically tested for continuity, insulation resistance and withstand voltage; the in-house lab adds temperature and humidity cycling, salt spray, connector insertion and withdrawal force, and cable bending tests. Inspection records are kept in the ERP system.

Is this cable compatible with ELD trackers for heavy trucks?

Yes. The range covers the interfaces used by ELD and fleet-tracking units on heavy trucks: J1939 9-pin Type I and Type II, J1708 6-pin, RP1226 14-pin and OBD2 16-pin. Existing builds for CalAmp (LMU3640, jPOD 5C992-2) and Geotab GO devices are listed under Specifications. Tell us the tracker model and we confirm the mating connector.
